Perpetual Motion Machine

Overview

Keep a ping pong ball moving for more than 60 seconds.

Design Requirements The Perpetual Motion Machine (PMM) must be:

  • no larger than 9 ¾” x 11 3/8” x 10 5/8” and must fit completely inside the measuring box.
  • completely self-contained.
  • free from pyrotechnics, water, or animal subsystems.
  • be free standing. The PMM will be tested outside the measuring box.
  • button or lever operated. A single press of the button or lever will operate the system.
  • designed, constructed, tested, drawn, and documented by the design tea.
  • Performance Requirements The Perpetual Motion Machine (PMM) must:

  • keep a ping pong ball in motion for more than 60 seconds. “In motion” is defined as moving linearly at a rate of at least 1inch per second. (A rotating ball that is stationary is not in motion.)
  • keep the ping pong ball in motion without any interference or help from outside sources (i.e. the designers).
  • Points:

  • Meets size requirements 5 points
  • Meets other design requirements 5 points
  • Moves the ping pong ball for 30 seconds 5 points
  • Moves the ping pong ball for 60 seconds 5 points
  • Moves the ping pong ball for 2 minutes 5 points/minute
  • A maximum of 40 performance points can be received. All teams submitting a prototype system for testing will receive a minimum of 5 points.
